Moldovan president, EU Commissioner discuss European integration

Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti today held a meeting with European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule, at the European Parliament, in Strasbourg on 2 July, the presidential press service has reported.

The officials praised the completion of the negotiations on the Moldova-EU association and deep and comprehensive free trade agreements.

Fule said it was important that Moldovan top authorities continued to focus on the consolidation of the rule-of-law state and separation of state powers as well as on the enhancement of democratic institutions. “The EU is firmly determined to help Moldova meet these goals,” Fule said.

The Moldovan and EU officials thoroughly discussed the Moldovan justice sector. Timofti assured Fule that Moldovan top authorities would transparently and efficiently use the EU funds to implement the justice reform. “We are willing to take all the steps necessary to improve the justice sector and clean up the system of the magistrates, who compromise the modernisation process of the Moldovan justice,” Timofti said.

The Moldovan president and the EU Commissioner agreed on a string of joint actions to initial the Moldova-EU association agreement in the context of the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius. Fule noted that this document would bring benefits for Moldova and its citizens.

During his visit to Strasbourg, Timofti also held meetings with the president of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, and the secretary of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), Thomas Markert.
