Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Ukraine and Russia almost finished the Kerch Strait division

According to the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Leonid Kozhara, Ukrainian and Russian parties are close to completion of negotiations on the delimitation of sea waters and the Kerch Strait.

“Negotiations on the delimitation are quite successful, but they are not over yet. But the crucial point is that the parties have achieved the development of the fundamental principles”, - Ukrainian MFA Head has stated.

According to him, the heads of the states should make a final decision to approve the proposals, prepared by the Ukrainian and Russian delegations, and then these negotiations may be considered as completed.

“Today we are very close to the solution”, - L. Kozhara has noted.

At that, he has refused to clarify the essence of the fundamental principles achieved, referring to the still ongoing negotiation process.

On July 12, 2012 Presidents of Ukraine and Russia declared the completion of negotiations on delimitation of the water borders; however, it has become known that these negotiations are not over yet, and the parties still continue to search for a compromise solution. The length of the water borders between Ukraine and Russia is 321 km.
