Moldovan, Italian officials address European integration, Transnistrian conflict, cooperation

The Italian government will back Moldova’s European aspirations, the chairman of the Italian delegation under the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation (OSCE), Riccardo Migliori, said at a meeting held with the chairman of the Moldovan Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Vlad Filat.

The officials discussed Moldova’s integration process in the European Union and the situation in the Transnistrian region. Vlad Filat stressed that Moldova had clear set objectives as regards its European integration prospect. ”Until the end of November, we shall have initialised an association agreement and a free trade agreement. We hope that, until the end of the current parliamentary mandate, the citizens could benefit from a visa free regime,” Filat said.

Riccardo Migliori promised that the Italian government would further back Moldova’s European aspirations, as Italia is to take over the European Union’s chairmanship in 2014 Italia. „We know that it is a difficult process, but Italy will support all Moldova’s efforts to join the great European family,” Migliori said.

Migliori underlined that it would be favourable to organise a Moldova-Transnistria meeting at parliamentary level. Filat expressed opinion that the situation in the Transnistrian region must be treated with great care and calm, in order not to admit tensions and provocations.
