Veterinary authorities: Ukraine may close border for Krasnodar grain transit

Because of an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Russia's Krasnodar region Ukraine may ban the transit of Russian grain. The final decision on the matter will be taken next week.

Meanwhile, the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine (SVFSU) is waiting for a response from the Russian Federation on measures taken to liquidate the disease, Ukrinform learned from the SVFSU on Thursday.

"If until Monday we do not get information on measures taken to localize the FMD outbreak, as early as next Friday we will prepare documents to prohibit the transit of grain from Krasnodar region," SVFSU deputy head Vitaly Bashynsky said.

At the same time, he noted that for the transportation of grain across the border, the Ukrainian side will require a certificate confirming its origin.

As reported, on July 5 Ukraine suspended the transit of Krasnodar grain, the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service sent a commission to Russia.
