More than a million of hectares belong to foreigners in Romania despite the ban

Such data have been obtained in the study, carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Moldnews informs.

Out of 14 million hectares of fertile land more than 1 million already belong to foreigners. At that, the prohibition for land acquisition by foreigners will be removed only starting from January 1st, 2014, resulting from the agreement of Romania’s accession to the EU.

It has appeared that it was quite easy to evade the ban, when land was bought out by companies with foreign capital, which were subsequently passed into ownership of foreigners with all their assets.

The Ministry has specified that foreigners are mostly attracted by the land with higher fertility results in Banat and Bărăganul.
