Moldova to receive US$1.6 mln within Global initiative to support peacekeeper operations

The Republic of Moldova’s national army will receive a US$1.6 million grant within the project called «Global Initiative to Support Peacekeeper Operations», being realized here under the United Nations auspices with financing provided by the U.S. Government, Rear Admiral Mark C. Montgomery, Deputy Director for Plans, Policy and Strategy at the United States European Command in Stuttgart (Germany), said in his meeting with Moldovan Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta held in Chisinau on November 29.

The parties discussed the current shape of Moldo-American cooperation in the defense field, progress of reform in this sector, and achievements in training the national army units taking part in international peacekeeper operations.

The Moldovan defense minister thanked the United States for its support and assistance rendered to the Moldovan armed forces to attract them to the realization of a number of projects, which permits to modernize army infrastructure and to improve the combat readiness of the Moldovan military.

Rear Admiral Mark C. Montgomery highly appreciated the Moldovan contingent’s preparedness to the global initiative on supporting of peacekeeper operations under the United Nations aegis. Montgomery thanked Moldova for joining this project serving to the promotion of the reform of the army, military training, and concrete professional training of Moldovan soldiers and officers engaged in coalition forces’ peacekeeper operations.
