Romania has fewest service sector workers and biggest percentage employed in agriculture

A new study released by EU statistics division Eurostat shows that an increasing majority of EU citizens work in the service industry – 70 %, up from 62 % in 2000. However, Romania’s workforce contrasts sharply with the rest of the Union – just 43 % of working Romanians are employed in the service sector.

The differences didn’t stop there. Romania has by far the highest percentage of people employed in agriculture, nearly 29 %, more than double second placed Poland’s 12.7 % and nearly six times higher than the 5 % EU average.

The UK had the lowest percentage employed in agriculture, just 1.2 %. The Czech Republic and Slovakia recorded the highest percentages working in industry – 38.4 and 37.4 % respectively, while Romania’s 28.8 % was a little above the 25.2 % EU average.
