US government to grant Moldova in peace-keeping operations

The USA will provide 1.6 million dollars to back Moldova in peace-keeping operations. The proceeds will be earmarked in the context of Moldova's acceptance as partner of the Global Initiative for peace-keeping operations. President Nicolae Timofti and US Ambassador to Chisinau William H.Moser made the statement on October 1.

Moser said the money will be used in improving the training infrastructure of the National Army in Bulboaca. «It will allow the peace-keeping battalion 22 train servicemen in participating in new international peace-keeping operations», he said.

Timofti said the financial means are meant to develop the training infrastructure of the National Army, which will increase the efficiency of Moldova's participation in international operations. «We need to modernize the National Army in line with the international standards, and we thank the US partners for the support on the matter», Timofti said.

Defence Minister Vitalie Marinuta said this programme will be implemented in 2013, and there will be held actions of planning works, in partnership with the US specialists, by late 2012.

The Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) is a security assistance programme, financed by the US government, which is meant for the rise in international capacity to efficiently carry out UN operations and peace-keeping ones in the regions.
