Romanian National Post Company to cut 3650 employees starting September

The Romanian Post National Company (CNPR) will cut 3650 of its total employees starting September this year, based on criteria agreed with the Trade Union of Pots Workers in Romania. These criteria will take into account the assessment of competence in work, possible acts of insubordination of the employee and its individual option, shows a release of the Romanian National Post Company to Agerpres on Thursday.

According to the abovementioned source, a meeting took place at the headquarters of the Ministry for the Information Society (MSI) focusing the restructuring and modernization process to be carried out at the Romanian Post Office, collective layoffs and measures to be taken to make the company more efficient. Participating in the meeting there were the Chairman of the CNPR Board, the executive managers of the National Post Company, representatives of the MSI and leaders of the Trade Union of Pots Workers in Romania.

‘Among the topics for discussion there was also the schedule to be followed by the collective layoffs in compliance with the agreement concluded between the managers of the Romanian National Post Company and the Trade Union of Pots Workers in Romania. The restructuring and modernization process of the Romanian Post is intended, in the short run, to restore balance between the volume of postal services and the number of employees the company has, in order the growth conditions to be ensured. Beginning with September 2013, there will be laid off 3650 employees of the National Post, based on a set of criteria agreed with the Trade Union. These criteria will be based on the assessment of competence in work, acts of insubordination of the employee and its individual option. The activity of the Romanian National Post Company will not be affected during the layoffs', showed the release.

The CNPR managerial team's main objectives are to increase revenues, cut expenses, reduce historical debts and consolidate the company's position as leader on the domestic market, in the context in which the volume of postal services dropped visibly over 2009-2012, on the background of a global trend triggered by the technological evolution and the development of online communications, showed the release.

The Romanian government decided, in late May this year, to prolong by 180 days the deadline for the privatisation of the Romanian National Post Company, given that no one from the potential investors had bought the company's book of tasks before May 28, 2013, as it was supposed to happen.

More than 50 potential investors from Europe, Asia and the US and also representatives of the international postal services and Romanian and international investments funds discussed with the representatives of the CNPR about this company's privatisation, but not one of them bought the book of tasks before the set deadline, showed the Ministry for the Information Society at that time.

The Romanian National Post Company is the national postal operator of Romania coordinating the largest national distribution network and serving more than 7.5 million mailing addresses.

CNPR has approximately 31,000 employees and it posted 1.206 billion lei in 2012 turnover.
