Moldova to open new embassies abroad

In the nearest future, Moldova will open new embassies abroad and will appoint its ambassadors in several countries. This issue was discussed today at the meeting of the Standing Parliamentary Committee for Foreign Policy.

Moldova will open its embassies in Canada, in the Netherlands and in Qatar. Moldovan Ambassadors in these countries will become the head of the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Ana Beleavskaia, incumbent Moldovan Envoy to Italy, Emilian Brenici and the head of the cabinet of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Valery Tikhonov, respectively.

The commission also approved the appointment of incumbent deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Popov as Moldovan Ambassador to Austria and the appointment of Stella Stingaci as Ambassador to Italy and Vatican. Antatol Vangheli will be appointed as Moldovan Ambassador to Israel. So far, he has been serving as Moldovan Charge d’Affaires in Israel.

While serving as Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, incumbent Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said that only professional diplomats, who have good service background and wide experience in this field, should be appointed as ambassadors. The same stance on this issue is shared by the incumbent leadership of the Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, although there are some exceptions.

Stella Stingaci is currently serving in the Parliament’s Apparatus. Before this, she worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Moldova’s diplomatic missions aboard, including in the Moldovan Embassy in Italy. At the same time, Valery Tikhonov is serving in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for less than a year. A year ago, some media outlets hinted that he may be appointed as Moldova’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation. A big scandal emerged in this connection, as many professional diplomats were standing for that post. In the end, Tikhonov became the head of cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and now, he will be appointed as Moldova’s Ambassador to Italy.
