EU to finance study of Greek and Bulgarian port network

The European Union will provide financial support worth EUR 750 000 from the TEN-T Programme to a project which aims at the exploring of the possibility of connecting by rail a series of maritime and river ports in northeastern Greece and Bulgaria.

It also aims to create a multimodal freight corridor by linking the Greek ports on the Aegean Sea and the Bulgarian ones at the Black Sea through a railway, thus providing an alternative route to the busy Bosporus pass. Furthermore, the connection to fluvial ports on Danube River will also be analyzed.

The project will study alternative ways for development of such corridor and look at how to attract public interest and shareholders engagement. The project will be executed by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency and its deadline is set for the end of 2014.
