Man-made reefs will appear on Constanta coast

In order to restore the ecosystem of the Black Sea, environmentalists suggest to place artificial reefs in Constanta near the port and the casino.

Most appropriate time for such construction is from late February to early March 2013. Most of the project costs will lie on the European Union.

On November 29-30, Odessa will host the first round table of the Ukrainian project «Research and restoration of primary sea filters - reefs», funded by the European Union through the Black Sea Basin Joint Operational Programme 2007-2013.

The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss experiences of placing man-made reefs in the partner countries: Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Turkey and Ukraine.

Reefs constructed in Bulgaria, were made of polypropylene. But Romanian legislation requires that reefs must be made of concrete or cast iron.

«Research and restoration of primary sea filters - reefs» is an international pilot project, focused on academic studies of the effects of man-made sea reefs in the Black Sea. The total budget of the project is €627,650, of which €564,885 is allocated by the EU.
