Rozhen observatory can be closed down

The financial crisis threatens to shut down the National astronomic observatory at mount Rozhen in the Rhodope Mountains.

According to associate professor Tanyu Bonev, who is the director of the observatory, the problem regarding the financing of the work process of the scientists and the maintenance of the equipment has become chronic.

«During the last 3 years the money we received from the state budget was not enough to guarantee a normal functioning of the observatory», – says Tanyu Bonev and adds:

«If we do not receive enough financial aid we will have to close down during the winter. Of course we could resume work next year as we will receive money form the new budget, but it remains unclear whether the most delicate equipment will function well after the closure. The low temperatures during the winter, especially in the mountain where the observatory was build could harm the new and precise appliances. We are expecting an answer over the next few days whether we will be granted enough funds so we can stay open during the coldest period or not. We could continue working until the end of November with great savings during this time which will reflect negatively on the remuneration of the personnel. We are discussing ways of implementing new mechanisms in order to rescue the observatory by switching to paying a minimum monthly salary of 145 Euros to all employees. It will cover professors with 30 years experience, associate professors, associates and security staff. Thus we will be able to save the equipment by living with under 150 Euros a month. People will pay the price of maintaining the telescopes in a good condition», – Tanyu Bonev goes on to say.

It is the only place in Bulgaria, where professional astronomical activity and work in the astronomical education is conducted.
