Blood Oil: Russian export of petroleum products from the ports of the Black and Azov Seas from 14/03/2022 to 31/03/2022

We are beginning to summarise the data on the export of Russian blood oil from the Black and Azov Seas from 14/03/2022 to 31/03/2022.

Remember the following figures. 

In the second half of March 2022, the total amount of Russian oil exported from the ports of the Black and Azov Seas was at least 7,700,000 tons (seven million seven hundred thousand tons).

The number of oil tankers was 116.

The cost of this blood URALS oil is estimated at about $ 5.24 billion (this is not a mistake - billions of US dollars).

This amount of export revenue of the aggressor country is equivalent to the cost of about 770 Kalibr cruise missiles.

Ports of destination of blood oil tankers

During the second half of March, from 14/03/2022 to 31/03/2022, Russian blood oil was exported from the Black and Azov Seas to the ports of 23 countries.

86 oil tankers (74%) were received by the ports of NATO and EU countries (they are highlighted in yellow and shown in red font in Figure 1).

This is a good opportunity for Ukrainian diplomats and media to respond, as well as for civil society and the Ukrainian diaspora in these countries.

The undisputed leader was Turkey (its ports received 32 oil tankers, or almost 28%). 

Greece ranked second (its ports received 16 oil tankers, or almost 14%).

Shipowners of oil tankers carrying blood oil

From 14/03/2022 to 31/03/2022, Russian blood oil from the Black and Azov Seas was transported by 116 oil tankers owned by shipowners from 19 countries.

  • The absolute leader was Greece. Greek companies own 51 of these oil tankers (44%). 

  • 29 oil tankers (25%) are Russian.

  • The total of 70 oil tankers (60%) belong to shipowners from EU and NATO countries (they are highlighted in yellow and shown in red font in Figure 2).

This is also a good opportunity for our diplomats and media to respond, as well as for civil society and the Ukrainian diaspora in these countries.

Ports of departure of oil tankers carrying blood oil

In the second half of March 2022, Russian tankers carrying oil and petroleum products departed from 7 Russian ports in the Azov and Black Seas and from 2 ports in occupied Crimea (See Map 1).

These ports are listed below. The list and Figure 3 show the names of the ports and their international UN codes (Un/locode: United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations): 

In the Black Sea:

  • RU NVS (NOVOROSSIYSK) – 63 oil tankers; 

  • RU TUA (TUAPSE) – 15 oil tankers; 

  • RU TAM (TAMAN) – 13 oil tankers;

  • RU ROV (ROSTOV-ON-DON) – 9 oil tankers;

  • UA FEO (FEODOSIYA) – 1 oil tanker (occupied Crimea);

  • UA SVP (SEVASTOPOL) – 1 oil tanker (occupied Crimea);

In the Sea of Azov:

  • RU AZO (AZOV) – 5 oil tankers;

  • RU KZP (KAVKAZ) – 5 oil tankers;

  • RU TAG (TAGANROG) – 2 oil tankers;

  • RU TMR (TEMRYUK) – 2 oil tankers.

The largest number of oil tankers departed from the ports of RU NVS (NOVOROSSIYSK) - 54%; RU TUA (TUAPSE) - 13%; RU TAM (TAMAN) - 11%; and RU ROV (ROSTOV-ON-DON) - 8%. In total, in the second half of March 2022, 86% of oil tankers departed from these ports (See Figure 3).

The volume of blood oil exports from the ports of the Black and Azov Seas

In the second half of March 2022, the vast majority of oil and petroleum products were exported from 3 Russian ports in the Black Sea: RU NVS (NOVOROSSIYSK) - 6,003,459 tons, 77.7%; RU TAM (TAMAN) - 829,915 tons, 10.7%; RU TUA (TUAPSE) - 606,416 tons, 7.9% (See Figure 4). 

Together, these 3 ports exported almost 7.5 million tons of oil in the second half of March 2022, or 96.3% of the total.
