Chubarov elected chairman of Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people

Former First Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Refat Chubarov has been elected the chairman of the Mejlis, a Ukrinform correspondent has reported.

"After counting the ballot papers of a secret vote Refat Chubarov should be considered the elected chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people," the head of the counting commission of the Kurultai (congress), Lemmar Yunusov, said.

A total of 242 Kurultai delegates participated in the vote, and two ballots were declared invalid. A total of 126 delegates voted for Chubarov, and 114 supported Remzi Ilyasov.

In order to win, a candidate had to collect 50% + 1 vote from among the delegates who participated in the vote.

Chubarov was born in Samarkand in 1957. He is a historian-archivist who graduated from the Moscow State Institute for History and Archives.

On October 26, Mustafa Jemilev left the post of chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.
