17 years since the death of world renowned Bulgarian prophetess Baba Vanga

Today marks the 17th anniversary since the death of world famous Bulgarian prophetess Baba Vanga - Vangelia Pandeva Gushterova.

Vanga, also known as the Petrich fortune teller passed away on 11 August 1996.

She was born in 1911 in Strumica, Macedonia. At the age of 12 Vanga lost her eyesight due to a sudden tornado, which lifted her up and threw her in the field. She was found only later covered by stones and soil.

Among the most popular statements attributed to Vanga are the death of King Boris III, the collapse of Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union, the return of Simeon Sakskoburggotski into the Bulgarian politics, the sinking of the submarine "Kursk" and the September 11 attacks.

Apart from prophesying, Vanga was believed to be also a healer through herbal medicines. According to her, people had to treat themselves only with herbs from the country they live in.

At the end of her life Vanga constructed the "St. Petka Bulgarian" chapel in Rupite, Petrich.

Fulfilling Vanga's last will and testament, her Petrich house was turned into a museum, which opened its doors on 5 May 2008.
