Bulgaria's Varna to elect new Mayor on June 30

Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna is to elect its new Mayor on June 30, it was announced on May 6.

If no candidate is elected, a run-off will be held on July 7.

Varna’s interim Mayor Hristo Bozov was sacked by the local municipal council at the end of April, which triggered new tensions in Bulgaria’s third largest city.

Architect Dimitar Nikolov was named as the new interim Mayor on April 29.

Fourth-term Mayor, Kiril Yordanov, resigned on March 6, amidst huge protests.

The largest demonstrations against high utility bills, monopolies, poverty, economic stagnation, corruption, and the political model of ruling the country after the fall of the Communist regime in 1989 were held in Varna back in February.
