Armenian nuclear plant suffers in an earthquake

Today, 15 km north of the Armenian town of Armavir at 15:11 local time, a 2.5-point magnitude earthquake took place, the press service of the Armenian Ministry of Emergency Situations reports.

The earthquake was felt also in the city of Metsamor, where the Armenian nuclear power plant is located.

The plant was put into operation in 1980 and stopped in March 1989 after the Spitak earthquake in December 1988 that killed 25,000 people. The plant was re-launched in November 1995 in connection with a severe energy crisis in the country. The plant is expected to operate until 2014.
