Romanian president cancels his visit to Moldova

Romanian President Traian Basescu’s official visit to the Republic of Moldova, which was scheduled for February 1, has been cancelled on the request of Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti, who was hospitalized two days ago due to exacerbation of his cholecystitis.

On this occasion, the Romanian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova, Marius Lazurca, was invited to the Moldovan presidential office, and through him the Moldovan side asked President Basescu to put off the visit for an uncertain time.

Through his press service, Nicolae Timofti thanked the Romanian side for understanding, and Moldovan institutions and citizens concerned – for possible inconveniences due to the visit postponing.

When Basescu’s visit was officially announced earlier this month, no reason or concrete objectives were mentioned. However, according to the unofficial information available with Infotag, the Romanian President was going to come here to calm down and reconcile the leaders of Moldova’s governing Alliance for European Integration (AEI), in which a serious conflict has broken out due to the loud scandal that was caused by the tragic ‘royal hunting’, organized last December 23 in the Padurea Domneasca national park and, particularly, by the fact that the high state officials involved tried to cover up the accidental murder of one of the hunters.

According to the agreed-on visit agenda, Traian Basescu was going to have only a 15-minute tete-a-tete conversation with President Timofti on Friday morning, and to attend a 45-minute assembly of the countries’ official delegations after it.

All the rest time until Friday night Basescu was going to devote to meetings in turn with Liberal Democratic Party leader, Prime Minister Vladimir Filat, Democratic Party leader and Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu, and Liberal Party Chairman Mihai Ghimpu, plus half an hour – to a meeting with Moldovan civil society representatives.
