Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipeline to be extended

The power of the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum (or the South Caucasus Pipeline, SCP) will be increased to 25 billion cubic meters of gas, rising to 45 billion cubic meters in the future. This was announced by the Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev. According to him, Azerbaijan and Georgia intend to implement a project to increase the capacity of the BTE gas pipeline, as well as several previously-implemented projects of global significance.

Natig Aliyev noted that the pipeline will be extended so that, after gas is received in the second stage of development of the "Shah Deniz" field in 2017, its capacity will be 25 billion cubic meters and later even 45 billion cubic meters.

The BTE pipeline went into operation in late 2006.
