Minister Bumacov says Moldova will not face bread deficit in 2013

Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov gave assurances that Moldova will not face a bread deficit in 2013.

He said at a festive meeting occasioned by the Professional Day of Farmers that in 2011, agricultural producers sowed 270 thousand hectares of winter wheat, whereas in 2012, this figure stands at 320 thousand hectares.

«In 2012, in spite of the severe summer drought, farmers managed to harvest 430 thousand tons of wheat. Next year, we are planning to harvest over 500 thousand tons. Due to the assistance provided by Ukraine and Romania, we managed to carry out the winter sowing in due time. The forecasts for the next years are good. Yet, in order to get a good harvest, Moldovan farmers must use cutting-edge technologies of soil processing,» said the minister.

He reminded that agriculture accounts for 15% of the GDP and for 45% of Moldovan exports.

Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that in spite of the existent difficulties, the Moldovan society took up the challenge.

«We should prove our possibilities to the entire world. We should act jointly in order to enhance the competitiveness of our goods abroad. Because of the 2012 summer drought, the country’s GDP went down 2.5%. The economic growth forecast for 2013, of 4%, is based on the losses incurred by the agriculture sector,» he said.

Moldovan farmers who attended the meeting expressed dissatisfaction with the high taxes in agriculture and with the poor support provided by the state.
