Georgian miners on strike

1600 miners in Tkibuli (Imereti Region) have started a strike. MP from Tkibuli Eliso Chapidze said that the strike was provoked by plans of Gruzugol to make some miners redundant and reduce wages for the ones remaining.

Chapidza, a Georgian Dream member Giya Jorjoliani and David Bejuashvili owning the Georgian Industrial Group Holding met with the mining company’s authorities. Chapidze said that the government will try to expand the coal market and prevent redundancies.

The Mindeli Mine in Tkibuli is the largest one in Georgia. It belongs to Gruzugol, a subsidiary of the Georgian Industrial group Holding.
