Estimated EUR 1 million's worth of Romanian art goes for auction

The Autumn-Great Masters of Romanian Painting will feature 135 masterpieces signed by 100 artists with a total estimated value of around EUR 1 million. Romanian auction house Artmark is organizing the sale on October 31 at the JW Marriott hotel in Bucharest.

«Catrina» a painting by Nicholas Tonitza of his daughter is expected to raise EUR 100,000 – 200,000. Tonitza’s «Nud in iatac» (Nude in bedroom) holds the current record for most the expensive work of art ever traded on the Romanian market – EUR 290,000.

Also up for auction will be «Natura statica cu flori, carte si lamai» (Still life with flowers, book and lemons) estimated at EUR 10,000 to 16,000, by Alexandru Ciucurencu and coming from the collection of philosopher and poet Lucian Blaga, acquired by him directly from the artist’s studio with money earned from the translation of the opera «Faust».

Other great names that will be presented at the auction Gheorghe Tattarescu, Nicolae Grigorescu Camil Ressu, Theodor Pallady, Marcel Iancu, Nicolae Darascu, Samuel Mutzner, Max Arnold si Gheorghe Petrascu.

The works of Romanian painters can be seen by the public from October 19 to 29 in an exhibition to be held at the Palace Cesianu-Racovita in Bucharest.
