Bulgaria's capital celebrates St. Sofia Day on Monday- the date when the Orthodox world pays homage to the Holy Martyrs Sofia and her three daughters Faith, Hope and Love.

St. Sofia Day is the official holiday of the eponymous Bulgarian capital.

Outgoing Norwegian Ambassador Tove Skarstein, Stoyan Bratoev, head of the Sofia Metropolitan company, composer and conductor Plamen Djouroff, architect Vasil Kitov and engineer Petar Mitanov be named honorary citizens of the capital on Monday.

Starting 18:30 at the National «Ivan Vazov» Theater, the Sofia City Hall will bestow awards for achievements in arts and culture.

In 1992, the Sofia Municipal Council selected September 17th for the celebration of Sofia's Day at the proposal of the then mayor.

Between 1979 and 1992, Sofia's Day was marked on April 3, the day when Sofia was declared capital of the country back in 1879.
