French supermarket chain Interex to close down stores in Romania

French supermarket chain Interex has decided to close down its stores in Romania and exit the local market by mid November, according to Romanian media, quoting market sources.

The company already canceled some of the orders and plans to sell the stocks of several stores it owns across Romania.

Interex’ losses in Romania have been widening year-on-year. Last year, its loss stood at EUR 16 million, and its turnover at some EUR 37 million. Earlier this year, the chain tried to sell its stores in Romania.

Interex is owned by Groupement des Mousquetaires- Intermarche, and opened the first store in Romania in 2002, in Ploiesti.

The Romanian network now includes 12 stores in Ploieşti, Giurgiu, Focşani, Târgu Jiu, Satu Mare, Râmnicu Vâlcea, Târgovişte, Constanţa, Sibiu, Vaslui, Drobeta Turnu Severin and Bârlad.
