Drug abuse in Bulgaria lower than average EU levels

The heroin market in Bulgaria is the smallest one in the EU to the expense of the synthetic drugs and cannabis and the abuse of drugs is below the average European levels, the General Directorate for Combating of Organized Crime has announced.

71 criminal groups dealing with trade and trafficking of drugs were detained by the directorate in 2012 and 370 people were charged for drug dealing. The number of sentenced people last year amounts to 149, representatives of the directorate specified. According to them, Bulgarian criminal groups participated in the trafficking of huge quantities of cocaine from Latin America to Europe. The General Directorate for Combating of Organized Crime took part in 3 operations for combating of these activities.
