Bulgaria with lowest number of marriages in EU

Bulgaria remains the EU member-state with the lowest percentage of marriages, taking at the same time one of the leading positions on the number of illegitimate children.

According to Eurostat data there are 2.9 marriages per 1,000 people in this country, which is lowest in Europe. Slovenia comes next with 3.2 / 1,000, followed by Luxembourg, Spain, Italy and Portugal with 3.3 per 1,000 people.

The traditional family model is best preserved in Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta. Number of divorces in Bulgaria is 1.4 per 1,000 citizens, or below the average index for the EU member-states. This country is also among Top 3 of the EU in number of illegitimate children born – 56.1 per 1,000 people.
