Between 25 and 40 per cent of the active population of Moldova is abroad

Between 25 and 40 per cent of the active population of Moldova is abroad, the data were presented by the head of the International Organization for Migration Mission to Moldova, Antonio Polosa at the international seminar "New trends in migration - demographic aspects", held on  January 17 in Chisinau.

Attending the seminar,  the head of the Bureau for Migration and Asylum, Olga Poalelungi, stressed that young people are mostly involved in the migration trend. At the same time, the number of people who have left abroad to work increased over the past decade. Poalelungi said that about 20,000 children of the Moldovan citizens were born abroad within the period 2006 -2010.

Poalelungi added that presently two worrying demographic trends are noted in Moldova. These trends refer to depopulation and ageing of the population. Thus, according to researches and forecasts in this field, Moldova's population will be about 2,9 million people until 2050. At the same time, the number of people aged over 65 years will triple by the same period.

Attending the seminar, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova Nicola Harrington-Buhay underscored that Moldova has to take actions based on very clear policies in this sector in order to diminish the negative effects of the migration.

The seminar was held in the context of Moldova's chairmanship of the UN Commission on Population and Development.
