Sofia marks 135 years since its Liberation

On January 4, Sofia marked the 135th anniversary of its Liberation. On this day, during the Russo-Turkish was (1877-1878) the first Russian troops entered the city under the command of General Yosiph Gurko.

Sofia Municipality marks the occasion with a series of events, starting with a thanksgiving mass at St. Nedelya Cathedral. The choice of the temple is deliberate, as the site where it was built up was the place where the first mass for dead was served when General Gurko’s troops entered Sofia. Wreaths of flowers were offered at the monument of the Bulgarian volunteers in the war of liberation.
