Ukraine world's fifth on the number of complaints to ECHR

Ukraine is ranked 5th in the world on the number of complaints against the state to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Ukraine's government commissioner for the European Court of Human Rights, Nazar Kulchytsky, told Channel 5.

«Ukraine is one of the largest countries in Europe with a large population, which itself influences a large number of applications of our citizens to the European Court of Human Rights. As of the end of September, according to the Court statistics, the first place on the number of complaints went to Russia, the second - Turkey, the third - Italy, the fourth - Romania and we are the fifth. The ECHR is considering 10,400 complaints against Ukraine, accounting for 7.5% of the total number of complaints lodged with the European Court of Human Rights,» he emphasized.

Most complaints come from Ukrainian citizens due to delay in sentencing and the excessive duration of trials in the Ukrainian courts.
