Romania’s annual inflation rate spikes at 3.8%

The annual inflation rate in Romania reached its maximum so far in August , of 3.88 percent, as prices went up by 0.51 percent, on the back of fuel and vegetable price hikes, according to Romania’s Statistics Institute (INS). The annual rate of inflation registered in July was of 3 percent.

The inflation exceeded the 3.2 percent prognosis from the Romanian Central Bank (BNR). The monthly increase in prices in August was of 0.7 percent for food, and 0.5 percent for non-food items, while the prices of services went up by 0.1 percent.

The biggest increases in price were for potatoes and beans, which were 9.3 percent and 8.5 percent respectively more expensive in August than in July. Fresh fruits were the only cheaper food item, down by 11.9 percent in August. For non-food items, the biggest price increase was for fuel, 2 percent.
