Energy sector is among biggest industrial polluters in Bulgaria

The energy sector remains one of the biggest sources of harmful emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, in Bulgaria this sector has a key role in the generation of greenhouse gases – 79.9% for the last year of surveys 2011.

This is one of the conclusions in the National report on the state of the environment and environmental protection compiled by the Environment Ministry and the Executive Agency for the Environment. Considerable sources of the unfavorable environmental impact are also the harmful emissions in the air, water, soil and the waste disposal.

There is a high percentage of the population who lives under conditions of high levels of fine particulate matter as this reaches at places 51% of the population. These concentrations are highest for the country in Pernik, Vidin and Vratsa.
