BG – Turkish border: 2 policemen at every kilometer reduce number of illegal crossings

Two policemen at every kilometer guard Bulgaria's border with Turkey. The intensified patrols were introduced not only because of the refugees from Syria, but also to prevent the increasing wave of economic migrants coming from Afghanistan, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Mali.

A total 1,166 policemen are posted at the border, said in an interview with Standart Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Svetozar Lazarov.

Thanks to the reinforced security in recent days, the number of refugees entering the country got reduced by three times.

Apart from the policemen of Sofia, who now have to keep under control the escalating tension in the Bulgarian capital, security staff from all across the country are directed towards the border area, Lazarov informed.
