Eighteen Moldovan villages de-energized by storm

The heavy rains recorded in the country today morning have caused power outages in 18 villages in Falesti, Singerei and Riscani raions. Relief workers are working on the spot, with the help of ten special equipment units, in order to mitigate the consequences of the downpour.

According to the data of the Ministry of the Interior, the power supply in the storm-hit villages is to be resumed soon.

Yet, the situation in Gotesti village, Cantemir raion, remains critical. A huge landslide of 25 meters depth and 300 meters width has emerged near the village, threatening the safety of at least ten houses located there. On Thursday, the local committee will hold an extraordinary meeting there, in order to assess the situation.

The heavy fall of rain has washed out the protection dam in the village, constructed only 2 years ago. According to preliminary data, about 5 million lei is needed to restore the dam, although the raion budget has only 300 thousand lei.

The rainstorm also caused troubles in the capital, flooding the largest underground pedestrian subway in downtown Chisinau.
