U.S. Ambassador hopes U.S. companies to invest in Ukraine's energy

New U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt expects that U.S. oil and gas companies Chevron and Exxon Mobil will invest “hundreds of millions dollars” in the energy sector of Ukraine.

He has said about this in an exclusive interview to the Voice of America's Ukrainian daily Chas-Time TV program.

He expressed hope that in several years there will be much investments from both U.S. companies (Chevron and Exxon Mobil - Ed), which will be measured by hundreds of millions dollars. He thinks that this will mean new working places for Ukrainians, possibility of extracting own energy resources, and that this will lead to energy independence, and that is “in the interests of both our countries,” the new U.S. Ambassador has said, who arrived in Kyiv on August 3 and is waiting for opportunity to present his credentials to President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych.

According to mass media, the new head of the U.S. Embassy said that his main priorities at the post will be “Ukraine's European integration, its energy independence and democracy.”

He said that the first priority will be helping Ukraine in realization of its European choice so that Ukraine's aspirations to be a part of Europe were formalized. The eighth U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine believes that this is “in the interests of your country, in the interests of the European Union and is good for the United States,”

As regards the priorities in helping Ukraine's striving to reach energy independence, the diplomat pointed out to importance of this aim, both from the commercial viewpoint and from the viewpoint “of geopolitical strategy.”

He said about his conversation with heads of both companies (Chevron and Exxon Mobil - Ed.) and they assured him of seriousness of their intentions to work on the Ukrainian market. The U.S. Ambassador said that they want to bring the best U.S. technologies, the best know-how and considerable financial resources in the Ukrainian energy sector.

He is convinced that this will benefit many Ukrainian citizens and make the country energy independent.
