Moldovan officials examine 2014-2020 agriculture, rural development strategy draft

The collegial council of the Moldovan Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry (MAIA) on May 17 examined the draft of the Development Strategy of Agriculture and Rural Environment in Moldova for 2014-2020.

The draft of the strategy includes three priorities in the development of the agriculture and rural environment, which provide for increasing the competitiveness of the Moldovan agro-food sector, by updating and integrating the market. The priorities also provide for the need to ensure a sustainable management of natural resources and improve living standards in rural areas.

Acting Agriculture and Food Minister Vasile Bumacov said the document included all the reforms that are necessary to promote those three main priorities in the agricultural sector. The ministry says almost 13 billion lei will be necessary to implement the strategy in 2014-2020.

The document also comprises an action plan on the implementation of the strategy, which provides for specific measures and activities, indicates who are the authorities responsible for their implementation and also specifies activitiy costs and financing sources.

Subsequently, public consultations would be held upon the draft of the strategy.

The draft was carried out with the support of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the World Bank (WB).
