Moldovan president, EU official discuss political situation

On February 17, 2013, President Nicolae Timofti met the head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Dirk Schuebel, at the presidential residence, the presidential press service has reported.

The two officials approached the political situation in the country, especially, the dissensions existing in the ruling Alliance for European Integration (AIE).

Timofti informed Schuebel about the recent consultations held with the AIE leaders. He expressed willingness to continue the consultations in the near future until a solution to the created situation is identified. Timofti assured that the current governing and all its exponents remained faithful to the European integration idea and would keep Moldova’s current development path.

For his part, Schuebel said the EU attentively followed the political processes occurring in Moldova and hoped that Moldova would continue implementing its initiated democratic reforms.

The two officials highlighted the importance of maintaining the legal and constitutional order in Moldova.

In the context, Timofti and Schuebel approached issues related to Moldova’s relation with the European Union. They reviewed the stages the country would have to follow in order to sign an association agreement with the EU and to get a EU visa free regime.
