Newly-appointed chairman of Superior Council of Magistrates in Moldova

Judge Nichifor Corochii on September 25 was appointed chairman of the Superior Council of Magistrates (CSM), with the vote of 10 members of CSM.

Nichifor Corochii was the one candidate for this post and was proposed by the chairman of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ), Mihai Poalelungi. Corochii served as acting chairman of the CSM since 23 March 2012.

Corochii was born in the village of Hancauti, Edinet district, on 10 December 1956. In 1981, he graduated the Faculty of Law of the State University of Moldova. He started to work in the judiciary system in 1987. In 1995, he was appointed as judge and chairman of the Edinet-based law court. On 31 October 2009, the General Assembly of Judges elected him as a member of the Superior Council of Magistrates.

The post of the CSM chairman has become vacant this spring after presidential election of Nicolae Timofti.
