Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia resigns

The Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia Khatuna Kalmakhelidze addressed the Prime Minister with a statement of resignation, says the statement published on the website of the Ministry.

«I am terrified by the facts of Gldani N8 prison. During my term, I tried to do everything to protect human rights and make prisons compatible with European standards, but it turns out this was not enough, since these facts happened. I’m very sorry and it doesn’t matter who organized this. As a human I am very sorry, and I want to take my human and of course political responsibility. Prisoners’ right must be protected in Georgia and everything must be done for this. I tried to do everything to protect human rights, tried to imagine what the inmates felt, I tried to symphonize with their family members, and the ongoing reforms in the system testify this.» says the statement by the Minister. Khatuna Kalmakhelidze hopes that all persons accountable for these crimes will be punished.
