Romanian President opposes liberalization of land sale to foreigners

Romanian President Traian Băsescu has spoken against the liberalization of land sale to foreigners.

The obligation on the free sale of land for any purposes has been undertaken by Romania at the time of its joining the European Union, with a moratorium till 2014, Moldnews informs.

The President has declared that European Union membership does not mean «we must sell everything we have. Being in the EU does not mean we must not have the national regulation».

«In a very short period of time, in accordance with the agreement on joining the EU, foreigners will be able to buy land in Romania. I am not saying they should not buy it, but, on the other hand, we should sell as much land as they have sold it to us», - he has noted.
