UN welcomes reconciliation between Turkey and Israel

The United Nations welcomes reconciliation between Turkey and Israel. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon calls the event an important and promising step towards stability in the region.

The UN also appreciated the role played in the process by US President Barack Obama.

Right after the US president's visit to Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu apologised to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the Israeli attack on a Turkish aid flotilla heading to Gaza that took place three years ago.

According to the Israeli prime minister's office, Turkey and Israel agreed to restore diplomatic relations.
