Romania’s Government approves division of the country into regions

New territorial units will be placed above the uyezds (districts), and their leadership will be empowered to attract European funds for development projects.

The Cabinet of Ministers approved a memorandum, providing for the beginning of work on further decentralization and regionalization of the country, the ministers decided to establish the regions before the year’s end.

At the same time, the project of dividing the country into regions is yet non-existent - it is to be developed in consultation with experts and civil society.
It is suggested that the country be divided into eight regions. Earlier, Romanian President Traian Basescu said about the need to abolish the uyezds (districts), citing excessive bureaucracy.
