Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries (DMHI) Delivers New Containership CSAV TOCONAO to Zodiac Maritime
Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries (DMHI) delivered on 28 June 2013 the first of four 8,600 TEU containerships, the 116,079 DWT “CSAV TOCONAO” to Zodiac Maritime Limited (UK).
The vessel was ready for delivery well before the contractual delivery date. Nevertheless, further to the mutual agreement between charterer of the vessel, Zodiac Maritime Limited and DMHI, formal delivery took place just on the contractual delivery date.
The vessel which is the largest ever built in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea area and has the following characteristics: overall length approximately 299.9 meters, breadth 48.4 meters, scantling draft 14.5 meters, maximum speed over 25 knots and is powered by a MAN B&W licensed main engine rated at 64,485 Horse Power.
CSAV TOCONAO was built under the supervision of Lloyd’s Register. Compañía Sud Americana de Vapores (CSAV) is the charterer of this series for long-term. The vessel is named after the small Chilean town of Toconao, which is located in the Atacama desert some 200 kilometers east of Antofagasta.
In addition to its spectacular sizes, the installation of the “state of the art” equipment, successfully finalized, was a big challenge for DMHI workers.
DMHI and Zodiac Maritime Limited signed in 2011 the contract for the building of a series of 4 containerships of 8,600 TEU, of which 3 vessels were scheduled to be delivered in 2013 and the last vessel at the beginning of 2014.
Referring to DMHI, pleased be informed on another premiere, which took place this year. DMHI concluded a new contract with an important Greek owner for the building two 9,100 TEU containerships. These vessels have an overall length of approximately 300 meters and will be delivered during summer of 2015.
Although DMHI is specialized in building big containerships and bulk carriers, efforts were made in the last years in order to diversify DMHI portfolio. Therefore, a first step was made last year when DMHI got its first order for two 6,500 units Pure Car & Truck Carriers continued this year at the beginning of April when it got an order for four 112,000 DWT Product Carriers.
Above strategy was adapted by DMHI as a response to the current fluctuation in the global shipbuilding market, having full support from Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering from Korea, the major shareholder of DMHI.
